Poultry: Dual-purpose birds an alternative to male culling
Researchers at the Institute for Food Safety and Food Hygiene at the University of Berlin have found that dual-purpose male chickens culled in a laying hen abattoir can be considered as an alternative to conventionally reared and slaughtered broilers. Dual-purpose birds combine moderate laying with growth performance. The industry is seeking alternatives to culling of male chicks.

Swine: Pig skyscraper opens in China
A 26-story pig skyscraper, the world's biggest single-building pig farm, has entered production in China's Hubei province. It is part of China's efforts to rebuild its pork industry after it has been devastated by African Swine Fever over the last several years, but experts say large-scale operations of this nature may increase the risk of future disease outbreaks.

Beef: The promise of yeast
According to research from the University of Guelph, yeast is showing potential as a substitute for antimicrobial use in feed for beef cattle. Work by Melissa Williams, a PhD student working with Dr. Katharine Wood, suggests that yeast has the potential for similar average daily weight gain in beef cattle as traditional additives.

Dairy: Robots to the rescue
Researchers at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague in the Czech Republic are using nanotechnology - mini robots - to isolate and remove staphyloccus aureus (s.aureus) from dairy products without negatively impacting the milk itself. S.aureus is a leading cause of mastitis in cows as well as human health issues.

Cattle: Reducing cattle methane emissions by 30%
Researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia are working on four projects with the potential to reduce methane emissions from the country's cattle industry by up to 30%. More than $17 million AUD has been allocated to the research by Meat & Livestock Australia and University of Queensland as part of a goal for Australia's red meat industry to be carbo neutral by 2030.

Cyber security: Protecting farms against cyber attacks
The only Canadian university research centre investigating cyber attacks on farm networks is located at the University of Guelph. Dr. Ali Dehghantanha says this is a phenomenon that is increasing, and his team at Guelph's Cyber Science Lab is developing techniques and procedures to detec, analyze and respond to cyber attacks on smart farming systems.

Struggling with ongoing labour challenges, meat processors around the world are investing in automation. Early investments supported case and freight packing, for example, but technical improvements in robotics, artificial intelligence-based systems and machine vision are opening up possibilities for more advanced solutions.
