Poultry: Single dose vaccine could protect against IBV
Scientist at the Pirbright Institute in the UK have developed a potential single-dose vaccine for Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) in poultry that could protect chickens against severe disease. IBV is a corona virus that causes respiratory disease in poultry; an effective vaccine will boost bird health and welfare.

Swine: ASF vaccine trial halted in Vietnam
Dozens of pigs in Vietnam have died after receiving an African Swine Fever vaccine developed by a company owned by the national agriculture ministry. This has brought a temporary halt to the vaccine trials while officials investigate what might be behind the mysterious deaths.

Dairy: Reducing heat stress in dairy cows
Universtiy of Melbourne researchers have found that betaine or fat, or a combination of the two can be fed to lactating dairy cows to help alleviate the impact of heat stress on the animals. The frequency and severity of heat events around the world are expected to increase, impacting both feed intake and milk production.

Beef: Diversifying winter grazing crops for livestock
A new field lab trial in the UK is looking at diverse winter grazing crops for livestock to help farmers cut feed and input costs. Participating farmers will replace their usual winter forage of single species brassica mono-culture with a diverse, 16-species mix that includes clovers, hairy vetch, ryegrass, spring oats, kale and linseed. The project is inspired by the success of similar work in New Zealand.

Climate change: Eco-innovation turns liquid manure into fertilizer
A U.K. company whose innovative slurry treatment solution turns liquid manure into nitrogen-rich fertilizer has been shortlisted for a U.K. Business Tech Award. Using a technique called plasma conversion, N2 Applied's technology "locks in" methane and ammonia in liquid manure to produce sustainable fertilizer on-farm that has been proven to almost completely eliminate methane and ammonia emissions.

In New Zealand, dairy processor Fonterra has launched the country's first electric milk tanker. It is part of growing global efforts to move transportation and equipment away from petroleum-derived fuels and energy sources.

On the horizon: the cultured or cellular meat debate
Europe's largest cell-based meat pilot plant opens in the U.K.
A cultivated meat start-up in the U.K. has launched what it calls the largest cultivated meat pilot plant in Europe as part of its mission to create "real, guilt-free meat". Ivy Farm grows pork stems cells in large fermentation tanks; the new facility can produce more than 2.8 million tonnes of cultivated meat annually.
